KINOSUZU-KAI (木の鐸会)

Work by founder: SUZUKI Yoshiko
Works by founder: Yoshiko Suzuki (1928-2008)

The Kinosuzu-kai is a creative doll-making group founded by doll artist Yoshiko Suzuki (1928-2008).
Founder Yoshiko Suzuki studied under doll artist Hatoe Ohtani (a direct disciple of Living National Treasure Goyo Hirata) in 1965, mastering the technique of “wood-carved, wood-grain-inlaid costume dolls (木彫木目込み衣装人形)” perfected by Goyo Hirata. While insisting on using ancient fabrics for clothing and “gofun” (shell powder) for finishing, she actively incorporated new materials like stone paste and new-generation adhesives.
She pioneered a unique doll-making technique that preserved the texture of traditional methods while improving upon the weaknesses of conventional techniques.
As a member of the Nitten Exhibition and the New Crafts Association, she created artistic dolls while also gaining recognition as a hina doll artist who brought a fresh approach to the craft using traditional techniques.
Even after Yoshiko Suzuki's passing, the Association continues its activities through artists who carry on her teachings.
Every January, the “Creative Hina Doll Exhibition” is held at the Takashimaya Art Gallery in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.
The creative hina dolls by Kinosuzu-kai members are unique works of art and craftsmanship, each entirely crafted by a single artist???from carving the wooden core, to selecting ancient fabrics for the costumes, to finishing the face.
The fabrics alone are ancient textiles, now almost extinct in Japan and extremely difficult to obtain.
These dolls possess a distinct presence that sets them apart from mass-produced hina dolls, and they continue to be cherished by customers who appreciate their artistic value.
